MTV’s VMA: Beyonce/Kanye/Swift drama and Lady Gaga’s fashion…

So the video above is pretty funny but what’s it about? Yes, that is Kanye West in the video and yes, it is from tonights MTV Video Music Awards. If you’re still in the dark about what exactly is happening and the true origin of the audio clip then you didnt watch the show.

Shame. Let’s take it from the top!

The VMA’s opened with a very sentimental Madonna recalling a very intimate moment between herself and the great Michael Jackson. Recalling a specific moment of a time when they were just starting to connect as friends. After Madge mentions Michael’s name, the crowd goes insane with applause and cheers. After many kind words, Madonna went on to recollect the moment she heard of Michael’s passing and added how she felt she “had abandoned him” in that time. How we had all abandoned him. Michael had been under a magnifying glass for many, many years and slowly he was burning away under the spotlight although he would never show it. This is why I loved him so much. Anyone strong enough to filter out the bad and embrace the good was a hero in my eyes. Below the rumors and finger pointing bearing down on him at the time, Michael was fighting but I like to think he wasnt alone. He had the support of his family, friends, and fans and that’s exactly how he left; with love from those close to him and those only knowing him through a television screen.

View Madonna’s speech on YouTube. Excuse the low quality:

Soon after the tears had dried the mood lifted and spirits were high for the upcoming MJ tribute with Janet Jackson as a special performer. Kicking the performance off with ‘Thriller,’ a bevy of dancers dressed in various Michael costumes from all of his videos joined in the well known choreography as the original Thriller video played in the background. Switching to the ‘Bad’ choreo then finally to ‘Smooth Criminal,’ the place became filled in white lights as the familiar robotic sounds and echoes filled the speakers when the video for ‘Scream’ began to resonate in the hearts of all those watching and listening. From behind a pane of glass in the center of a bee-hive style set came the wonderful and always amazing Janet Jackson (Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty) The crowd, aswell as us at home, went insane when we caught sight of that black and white latex jacket and pants strut their way to the center of the stage. What a performance it was going to be! Ms. Jackson command the stage just as Michael did but the performance didnt reach it’s climax until the sweet Janet drop into her soft hook then, as if her older brother was still around, the dancers split and she joined Michael in that short but very memorable routine. With a smart angle and the screen showing one half of the due in the back, Janet and Michael brought the house down until finally ending it with Michael’s signature fist in the air and high pitched ‘wooh!’ The room was on its feet and chills covered the back of my neck and ears. The entire performance was breath taking and powerful and kept to the energy exuded by the Jackson’s. definitely something that would be talked about the next morning.

…or is it?

The first award was being given to the ‘Best Female Video’ nominees (Lady Gaga – Poker Face, Kelly Clarkson – My Life Would Suck Without You, Katy Perry – Hot n Cold, Pink – So What, Taylor Swift – You Belong To Me, and my personal pick Beyonce – Single Ladies) as presented by ‘She-Wolf’ herself, Shakira, and…that one guy who’s not Robert Pattinson from ‘Twilight’…

The envelope was peeled open and the winner was….Taylor Swift. Yes, I must say, I was surprised and a little upset by the fact that Beyonce and Lady Gaga were side swiped by Swift but what happened next made me drop my jaw on the floor…

After Taylor graciously accept her silver moon man, her speech was cut short when Kanye joined her onstage and pulled an original punk move. Taking the mic from Swift, Kanye went on to explain how the award was given to the wrong person and belonged to Beyonce, stating that “Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time” (which I whole heartedly agreed with) leaving Taylor AND Beyonce stunned and confused. I must say, I like Kanye now that he did this because I also think she should’ve won but feel terrible for Taylor Swift. Imagine being a fairly new artist winning your first VMA nom and suddenly having someone telling you that you shouldnt have won. It wouldnt be later on in the show that Taylor would have a second chance at her interrupted acceptance speech when Beyonce was awarded the ‘Video of the Year’ award and brings Taylor on stage to give her the moment stolen by West. Don’t believe this all went down?

EDIT: Looks like YouTube took down the video so I guess you’ll need to tune in to any news channel tomorrow to see the awkward speech :/

The remainder of the show went on without any further glitches or awkward appearances by Kanye West (who didnt win a single award that night) but did showcase some very amazing performances by Beyonce, Pink, Taylor Swift, Muse, Green Dy, Jay-Z, and an incredible show by Lady Gaga (sorry, video not available on YouTube)

The Video Music Awards closed with Jay-Z and featuring Alicia Keys and the trailer for the new Michael Jackson documentary ‘Michael Jackson: This Is It’ hitting theaters September 27th. Definitely a MUST SEE! Check out the HD trailer below.
